10 Clusters of Innovation in New England

Here's my premise: even in tough times, exciting stuff is happening (and jobs are being created) in certain pockets of the economy.

That's the focus of today's Globe column. It lists 10 clusters of innovation in our region, based on their size and potential for growth. Some are already pretty well-established, and others are still seedlings. The column elaborates a bit on each cluster.

    1. Biotech and pharma
    2. Clean tech
    3. Robotics
    4. Cloud computing and virtualization
    5. Medical devices and diagnostics
    6. Video games
    7. Mobile communications
    8. E-Healthcare
    9. Web 2.0/Digital Media
    10. Consumer electronics

What'd I miss? Post a comment if you would...

Scott,

I would add either sub-clusters -- e.g. Neurotechnology -- or cross-clusters -- e.g. robotics + healthcare, RFID + Financial Service.

And you missed some key clusters:

* Security & Defense -- e.g. Raytheon, Tyco, LoJack, Intellivid, Stoplift, etc.

* Financial Services -- e.g. Fidelity, etc

* Business Consulting -- e.g. Boston Consulting Group, Monitor, Innosight, etc

I would also include enterprise software or business intelligence.
