Looking at Media Start-Ups in New England

My most recent Globe column focuses on some of the new media-oriented start-ups in New England -- and the challenges they'll face in an advertising-constrained climate. It mentions GlobalPost, Foneshow, Gather, and Helium. But I had to leave out a few others, like NameMedia, which is building a handful of "enthusiast" Web sites like Garden.com; The Daily Grommet, a video guide to cool new products; and BlogPire, a network of product-oriented blogs, like SingleServeCoffee.com.

Know of other interesting media start-ups? Post a comment here.

The video is a short conversation with GlobalPost CEO Phil Balboni, who previously started and ran New England Cable News:

Well, at HubSpot, we're a software company, but we market by creating media. We blog, we create music videos, we have a live tv show about marketing and on and on.

A lot of people find this content, and a good chunk of those people end up purchasing HubSpot software.

We may be seeing fewer media companies, but we're also seeing more and more companies that do media.

Have you seen Adva Mobile? They are a mobile marketing start-up based in Boston that launched last month. I've been helping them reach out to Boston area bands to set up mobile fan clubs. Their website is at advamobile.com if you'd like to check them out.

TextTelevision is a New England new media startup.

We reshape text as a flow-animation to provide a slower, more involving reading experience.

Here's FDR's talk to the nation on March 3, 1933:

Still very timely today.

Thanks for the mention Scott. At NameMedia we are building a consumer Intenet business right here in suburban Boston that serves over 50m visitors/month. Our enthusiast sites are part of the business that include Gardens.com, Tarot.com, Craftster.org, Geek.com, Photo.net and many more. These are the leading enthusiast sites in each of these categories. We have a great team working hard to bring innovation to online media. Innovation for consumer Internet is happening here in New England!
